FIFA 12 | So You Want A… Defensive Midfielder (Winter Update)

Moving on to the midfielders, here is the updated data for defensive midfielders.

As usual, listed below are some of the most promising young defensive midfielders in the game. In an attempt to make this relevant to as many players as possible, I have not included any CDMs whose OVR is above 73 – this way you can keep your costs down and have some cash left over for other purchases (be they real players or new scouts). Furthermore, I have listed the players by cost, with the cheapest at the top of each sub-group (players are grouped by potential).

Here are my recommendations:

  • Luca Marrone
  • Ezequiel Cirigliano
  • Nzuzi Toko

Luca Marrone will become a player of real quality if you develop him to his potential. He is strong and has excellent distribution skills, meaning not only can he break up opposition attacks, but he can start ones of your own as well. His long shots are also very good, so don’t be afraid to let him venture forward and have a go now and then.

Ezequiel Cirigliano is similar to Marrone in many ways, although he is more of a playmaker than a defensive minded player. Go through him to launch your attacks, as he has the brains and vision to become the control buy cheap xanax room of your team. Snap him up quickly – he’s one of River Plate’s best midfielders, so his OVR will rapidly improve, and with it his price.

Finally, Nzuzi Toko is not only cheap as chips, but has fantastic physical stats. He is quick, strong and has great stamina, so he can regularly start matches in your team, encouraging his growth. Furthermore, he has the strength to break up opposition plays, but also the speed to go past people and create chances for your side. As a bonus, because he plays in Switzerland it’s unlikely any other clubs will come after him, so you can take your time and buy him when you need him most.

Please bear in mind that these figures may not be exactly the same on your game. These stats are taken from my own personal experiences, but are likely to be very similar to those on your own game. The best thing to do is to make sure you keep checking these players, as their prices may drop radically after a while.

Finally, if you’ve had any experiences of good players’ prices changing wildly (especially if their price drops), please post it in the comments.

So, without further ado, here are the players:

  1. out of biglia, frimpong, coquelin and yennaris which 2/3 should i sell or get rid of cos im planing a bid for javi garcia end of season.

i reckon biglia but im not sure about coquelin and yennaris cos coquelin is versatile and yennaris has great pace for his position

    1. Post

Yennaris definitely, his potential is only 68. Out of Frimpong and Biglia, do either. Frimpong’s potential is 81 and Biglia’s is 79, so there’s not much between them. If Garcia is expensive, then just sell whichever will get the best price (as long as you feel you don’t need him). If you need none of them or are really desperate for cash, sell all of them. Garcia’s potential is 83, so he’ll be worth it.

Good idea, Coquelin is much more versatile than the others so he can fill in where and when he’s needed.

To be honest, I don’t really know. I don’t follow a team so I only see the highlights, but from what I’ve seen he looks decent. I think 78 seems like a pretty fair potential for him though.

  2. What about Wakaso from Villareal? He is only 22 and has unbelievable physical stats. He come with the Engine attribute and has high offensive and defensive work rates. He is already listed so comes cheap.

He’s a good one, but his potential is 78, so it’s not quite high enough to get onto this list. If you want a CDM with awesome physical stats but with higher potential, then try Nzuzi Toko from Grasshopper, he has potential 82.

    1. Post

Well Luca Marrone is a really good one, he’s strong and has good tackling, but his passing and shooting are also good, so he’s good going forward and back. He’s got potential 86 too.

Another good one who’s a bit cheaper is Chico (playing for Palmeiras). He’s super strong and his defensive stats are good, so he’d also make an excellent CB if you needed cover.

  3. i’ve just sold alex song for £25 million on my new arsenal career mode. who do you think would be a good replacement that is between 22 and 26? the budget is £25 million i’ve bought capoue but i still want another cdm as he’s the only cdm not loaned out. i was thinking sami khedira as he’s not in real’s starting 11 and wouldn’t cost too much but who would you buy.
oh and i need a new striker as podolski and van persie are my only striker’s not loaned out. could be young. could be old. but i’ve decided i’m going to try and sign robert lewandowsi soon so it would be good if he doesn’t cost too much?

    1. doesn’t matter anymore. i got sami khedira for £14 million and paco alcarer for £3.84 million. Who do you think would be a good replacement for van persie cos i sold him as he wanted to leave?

For CDM I would probably get Gabriel or Marrone from Juventus (potential 88 and 86 respectively) if you want to develop them up. Or you could try Arturo Vidal (also Juventus, potential 88) is he’s not too expensive.

For a ST, try my two striker articles: goalscorers and target men. I’m not sure how different the prices are on yours now that you’ve advanced a few seasons, so check out the players on those lists and see which is best for you.

  4. Y isnt Gabriel in your recommendations?
    He grows faster than Marrone.
N Marrone is a real whiner he wants to play evry game evn though hes half dead.

    1. Post

Mainly because I tried to limit myself to 3 recommendations. Cirigliano plays a lot like Gabriel, and he’s much cheaper. But honestly I could have recommended any of the top 7 or 8, I just stayed away from Gabriel because of his price relative to the others. His potential really makes him stand out even if I don’t recommend him though!

    1. Post

Very true, although Wilfred Osuji of Padua is another good one – same potential as Danilo Pereira (78), but he only costs £675,000, whereas Pereira is just under £1m I think. Still, Pereira has a slightly higher starting OVR, but they’re both very good players 😀

      1. For some odd reason certain players can not be found in search. To fix, search the team the player is on and he will appear. I did this with coquelin and tyrone marsh.

  5. I’m a big fan of mubarak wakaso from villareal. In my cm with them he along with bruno are my starting d mids. I’ve gotten him up to 75 and hes put some amazing performences in. I love his physical ability. I do want some ove who will reach 80 though. I know toko doesn’t have the best defensive traits. Hes in my shortlist and this is my first year so I’m waiting till the january window. Does he develop adaquetly ondefense or should I take another option. I do really want a physically exceptional player. Whats my best bet?

    1. Post

I think Fernando of Gremio gets very good physical stats, although most start in the mid/high 70s. His tackling isn’t great, but his mental attributes are really good, as are his marking and passing skills. The same goes for Emmanuel Frimpong of Arsenal and Guida Fofana of Olympique Lyon.

Other than Wakaso and Toko, that’s about it if you’re looking for players who are affordable and have 1) high potential, 2) good defensive stats, and 3) high starting physical stats, I’m afraid :/ If it’s any consolation, I’ve just done a season with Toko and he grew 2 points, having his defensive stats (marking, slide and stand tackle) all grow by 3 points, so he will improve. He’s more of a box-to-box centre midfielder really, having good passing and attacking stats as well as defensive ones.

  6. i tried to find gabriel by using your advice to check in the team he is in.but he isnt in juventus.
its my 3rd year in career mode.i tried to find him by surname.but he doesn’t come.please help.

  7. Give me Manchester united I give you 40 millions £ benefic and minimum 2 Tittles per year !
    Bring me
    Fernando porto
    Fernando gremio
    Alen halilovic
    Sidney sam
    Jetro williems

    Van persie , rooney , welbeck , cleverly , carrick., fletcher , anderson , chicharito , fabio , evra , vidic , ferdinand ,
If someone don’t agree I can try to explain why that radical change . And any idea about is welcome

    1. are you talking about in game or real life? real life that team would get slaughtered, in fifa you would have growth but it would be hard going getting results, if your united you would be better off going for established talents like el shaarawy, maybe a banega and ranocchia as a shout for CB
