These articles aim to highlight young, high potential players that are priced at £1m or less. Most articles will showcase players with a minimum potential of 78. However, in some cases I lowered the minimum potential to 77 to ensure there were a good number of players for you to choose from.

The ‘Cost’ column refers to the price your scout will bring back after he’s looked at the player. The ‘They want’ column refers to the price you will be quoted by the team if you enquire about their player. These enquiry prices are negotiable, so don’t be afraid to bid below what they want.

Sometimes teams will refuse to quote a price for their player because he has only just joined them. In these cases, I have not given a price in the ‘They want’ column. Where this is the case, I have included a player if their scouted price is £500,000 or less, as this usually equates to a price of around £1m being quoted by the player’s team.

The ‘Avai?’ column is short for ‘Available?’ and refers to whether the player is available to buy in the first transfer window. The first letter indicates this (Y for yes, they are available and N for no, they are not), whilst the number refers to the length of their contract. The ones to watch out for here are those with Y/1 or Y/0 next to their names. This means the player’s contract is about to expire, so you should be able to get them for a discount price.

Finally, because EA release update squads every week, this could mean that some of the players listed in the article below are slightly different on your game. Furthermore, players sometimes exceed their potential, while it has been noted that occasionally players don’t grow as hoped. Therefore these stats are a guide only.

These are the right midfielders I recommend:

  • Jacob Murphy
  • James Forrest
  • Jordan Graham
  • Bilal Basaçikoglu

First recommendation in this article is Jacob Murphy, and he is pretty much the definition of a lower league gem. He may only start out at 53 OVR, but this player develops into a fantastic right midfielder. He already starts out with pace, and what marks him out further are his finishing and shot power stats – when he starts to approach his full potential, he’s going to be scoring goals as easily as he creates them. All that for a bid of around £120,000 has got to be one of the bargains of the year.

James Forrest is next, and I’ve chosen him because he’s one of only two players rated 70+ that you can get for £1m or less (the other is Hernán Villalba in the central midfielders article). Although his club ask for £1.1m, I’ve allowed him into this article because I actually managed to buy him for £700,000, and seeing as that will get you a young, high potential wide player with an impressive starting OVR, I felt like I couldn’t leave him out. Forrest has got serious speed (he already has the speedster speciality), great dribbling and he can score as well, making him a perfect attacking option.

Number three is Jordan Graham, and I picked him because, among other reasons, his dribbling stats is one of the best in this article. Although his OVR is 58, his dribbling is already 76, so without even so much as a point of growth he’ll already be a potent force in the final third. With a few years of growth he’ll be dancing around defences all game long. And for £300,000 he’s an absolute steal, never mind that you’ll be able to get him for less than that.

Finally, we’ve got Bilal Basaçikoglu. What impressed me about him was his ability to combine attacking prowess with goal-providing proficiency. He’s already got 92 acceleration and 84 sprint, which combined with his 74 dribbling and agility will make him a danger to any defence. However, one of his stronger stats is his crossing. While some wide midfielders can only dribble or can only cross, he can do both, so as he develops he’ll become an all round wide midfield maestro, exactly what you want whether you need a goal scored or one created.
