You don’t always have to pay a hefty transfer fee to get quality players

In fact, sometimes you don’t have to pay any transfer fee at all. There are plenty of high potential and high OVR players in FIFA 15 who will join your team for nothing, and the only payments you have to make are for their wages. That can be especially useful if you’re doing a career with a lower league team where money is tight, but any team can benefit from free transfers.

So if you’ve never tried getting players for free in FIFA 15 before, I’ve put together this series to help you find the best free players available to buy.

How do I get players for free in FIFA 15?

That’s easy – once you’ve found the player you want, just find them in the January transfer window and press ‘approach to sign on contract expiry’. Just wait a couple of days for them to mull over the contract, and if they accept then they will join your team at the end of the season.

But you can’t sign any player this way – they must be aged 23 or above by the time the January transfer window ends and have a year left on their contract (i.e. it will expire at the end of the season).

How do I find these free players?

Well, you could send your scout to various countries looking for players whose contracts are expiring. Of course, the problem with that is that it all depends on the quality of your scout – poor scouts might miss plenty of free players.

But given how unreliable that is, you’re much better off coming here and checking out my guides. Just have a browse of the list below – I’ve included every player who can be signed for free and has a minimum potential of 75, so you know you’re getting top quality players all round (and check out my other guides in this series for more free players).

All the OVRs listed below are true at the start of a career. When they join your team their OVR is likely to have changed, so you can expect the players to be even better than how they’re listed below, provided they’re not aged over 30. If they are, don’t be surprised if their OVR has declined.

Let’s check out my recommendations.

FIFA 15 best free transfers: attacking midfielders

Yoann Gourcuff is a superb all-rounder

The elite option

FIFA 15 best free transfers: attacking midfielders

Provided you have the money, there’s one clear option to go for if you’re looking for a top quality free attacking midfielder: Yoann Gourcuff. He’s got absolutely everything you’d want from a player of this position: dribbling, passing, shooting, vision – you name it, he’s got it.

For instance, 84 dribbling and 85 ball control will be a nightmare for defenders to deal with, while his powerful shots should trouble goalkeepers too. It’s not a problem if you want to drop him back a bit, because his 85 vision, 83 short passing and 84 long passing will help him pull the strings from central midfield. And with 79 OVR and 81 potential, he’s the player to get if you want sheer quality. His wages are £90,000.

Alberto Bueno will score you a hatful of goals

The mid-range option

FIFA 15 best free transfers: attacking midfielders

If it’s a player with a bit more attacking focus you’re after, take a look at Alberto Bueno. This guy comes with 77 finishing, 77 shot power and 80 long shots, so should be able to bang in the goals no matter how close to the keeper he ends up. He’s got a bit more pace than Gourcuff, so should be able to use that to break clear of defences and bear down on goal.

Though his OVR isn’t as high as Gourcuff’s, he offers something a little different – he’s an attacker while Gourcuff is more of a creative. And as well as that, his wages are almost have as much as Gourcuff’s, so he’ll make an excellent addition to any team looking for talent without breaking the bank. His wages are £50,000.

Josef Hušbauer will be deadly for less wealthy teams

The budget option

FIFA 15 best free transfers: attacking midfielders

And speaking of bargains, my next choice is Josef Hušbauer of Cagliari. He’s very much like Bueno in that he is very attack-minded, with his 78 acceleration, 79 sprint speed and 76 finishing likely to bring him a fair haul of goals during his time at your club. He’s also got good dribbling and passing, so can create chances for both himself and his teammates.

There are a few things that make him a little different, however. He has decent strength (73), so should be able to hold his own against opposition challenges, while his own defensive stats are not at all bad for a player of his position; that means you can drop him back to central or even defensive midfield if you need to and he’ll still do a fine job. Wherever you end up using him, he’s a bargain with £20,000 in wages.
