You don’t always have to pay a hefty transfer fee to get quality players

In fact, sometimes you don’t have to pay any transfer fee at all. There are plenty of high potential and high OVR players in FIFA 15 who will join your team for nothing, and the only payments you have to make are for their wages. That can be especially useful if you’re doing a career with a lower league team where money is tight, but any team can benefit from free transfers.

So if you’ve never tried getting players for free in FIFA 15 before, I’ve put together this series to help you find the best free players available to buy.

How do I get players for free in FIFA 15?

That’s easy – once you’ve found the player you want, just find them in the January transfer window and press ‘approach to sign on contract expiry’. Just wait a couple of days for them to mull over the contract, and if they accept then they will join your team at the end of the season.

But you can’t sign any player this way – they must be aged 23 or above by the time the January transfer window ends and have a year left on their contract (i.e. it will expire at the end of the season).

How do I find these free players?

Well, you could send your scout to various countries looking for players whose contracts are expiring. Of course, the problem with that is that it all depends on the quality of your scout – poor scouts might miss plenty of free players.

But given how unreliable that is, you’re much better off coming here and checking out my guides. Just have a browse of the list below – I’ve included every player who can be signed for free and has a minimum potential of 75, so you know you’re getting top quality players all round (and check out my other guides in this series for more free players).

All the OVRs listed below are true at the start of a career. When they join your team their OVR is likely to have changed, so you can expect the players to be even better than how they’re listed below, provided they’re not aged over 30. If they are, don’t be surprised if their OVR has declined.

Let’s check out my recommendations.

Dani Alves is skilled in both attack and defence

The elite option

FIFA 15 best free transfers: right backs

My elite choice Dani Alves needs little in the way of introduction, and if you can afford his £120,000 wages then he should be at the top of your list. Even at 31 he has the talent to be a key part of your team, with his ridiculous physical, defensive and attacking stats likely to cause problems to even the best opposition players.

Just be aware that he will be 32 by the time he joins your club. His OVR is likely to start going down shortly after, but to be honest he will still be a superb player, and it will be a long time before he will exhaust his usefulness to you. He should still arrive at the start of the second season with 83 OVR, so there’s no need to worry about any nasty surprises there. If you can afford his wages then you’ll be able to bag yourself a truly exceptional full back.

Damián Suárez is another fantastic all-rounder

The mid-range option

FIFA 15 best free transfers: right backs

Alves is admittedly very expensive, so if your budget is a bit more restricted then you can’t go far wrong with Damián Suárez. One of the best things about him is that he has a fantastic medley of physical stats. His 79 acceleration, 86 sprint speed and 77 strength mean that even if he is beaten for pace (unlikely), he can still muscle his way back into possession. Add in 91 stamina, 83 jumping and 85 agility and he becomes an amazing physical presence.

He’s got good technical stats too and can take a mean free kick, and his 77 potential means he should become even better in years to come. With wages of £35,000 he is far more affordable than Alves, but can still make a huge impact if you sign him for your team.

Eneko Bóveda brings a lot for a small amount of cash

The budget option

FIFA 15 best free transfers: right backs

My budget option this time is Eneko Bóveda of SD Eibar in Spain. He’s very well balanced in terms of his technical stats, and his good passing and dribbling mean you can put him in central midfield if the need arises. Added to that is his 80 stamina; at lower league level he will be a superb player, so ensuring he plays as much as possible will be vital – something his high stamina will really help out with.

With an OVR of 73, you would normally expect to have to pay much more than £10,000 a week for his services, which puts him within reach of most lower league teams when you factor in that you don’t have to pay any transfer fee. And with good pace and heading, he will be a danger going forward and could even chip in with a few goals, making him an even better bargain.
