You don’t always have to pay a hefty transfer fee to get quality players

In fact, sometimes you don’t have to pay any transfer fee at all. There are plenty of high potential and high OVR players in FIFA 15 who will join your team for nothing, and the only payments you have to make are for their wages. That can be especially useful if you’re doing a career with a lower league team where money is tight, but any team can benefit from free transfers.

So if you’ve never tried getting players for free in FIFA 15 before, I’ve put together this series to help you find the best free players available to buy.

How do I get players for free in FIFA 15?

That’s easy – once you’ve found the player you want, just find them in the January transfer window and press ‘approach to sign on contract expiry’. Just wait a couple of days for them to mull over the contract, and if they accept then they will join your team at the end of the season.

But you can’t sign any player this way – they must be aged 23 or above by the time the January transfer window ends and have a year left on their contract (i.e. it will expire at the end of the season).

How do I find these free players?

Well, you could send your scout to various countries looking for players whose contracts are expiring. Of course, the problem with that is that it all depends on the quality of your scout – poor scouts might miss plenty of free players.

But given how unreliable that is, you’re much better off coming here and checking out my guides. Just have a browse of the list below – I’ve included every player who can be signed for free and has a minimum potential of 75, so you know you’re getting top quality players all round (and check out my other guides in this series for more free players).

All the OVRs listed below are true at the start of a career. When they join your team their OVR is likely to have changed, so you can expect the players to be even better than how they’re listed below, provided they’re not aged over 30. If they are, don’t be surprised if their OVR has declined.

NOTE: This article is on target men – players who utilise their size and strength to excel in the air. If you’re looking for a striker with high pace, dribbling and finishing attributes, you’ll want my article on goalscorers.

Also note that Paolo Guerrero is a free agent, so he will be randomly assigned to a club at the start of your career. His wages will depend on the club he ends up at, so I have left that blank.

So, let’s check out my recommendations.

André-Pierre Gignac is an absolutely lethal striker

The instant impact

FIFA 15 best free transfers: target men

If you want a target man to fit your style of play and don’t mind paying a fair amount for him, André-Pierre Gignac is a fantastic choice choice. He’s one of the best free target man in FIFA 15, with 84 finishing and 81 heading meaning he’ll score no matter what opportunities are presented to him.

He’s got a cannon of a long shot, but the mental side of his game is also superb, and his 83 positioning will see him pop up in the right place at the right time to score you those all-important goals. So if you’re looking for a target man to hit the ground running and lord it over opposition defences, Gignac is the player to go for.

NOTE: André-Pierre Gignac has recently signed for Tigres in real life, so he may not be available for free for much longer – make sure you sign him up before it’s too late!

Artem Dzyuba is an incredibly dominant target man

The beast option

My next choice – Artem Dzyuba – starts a little lower rated than Gignac but he is an absolute tank. He’s got that lethal combination of 92 strength and 75 sprint speed that makes him so hard to stop going forward. Whether he’s holding the ball up for teammates, challenging on crosses or just charging through defences, he’s going to be like a wrecking ball on the attack.

He’s 6’4” and has 85 heading accuracy too, so is going to be dominant in the air, but his 82 finishing and 80 shot power means he’s good with the ball at his feet. With high potential and some amazing stats, £45,000 in wages is a very reasonable price to play for such a beast of a player.

Julio Furch has some great stats for such a cheap player

The budget option

FIFA 15 best free transfers: target men

I always include a cheaper option in these guides and this time we have a real corker: Julio Furch of Veracruz in Mexico. His wages are just £4,000 but he starts off rated 72, which is much higher than you’d usually get for that sort of wage. And he’s got the stats to back that up, with 85 strength and 76 heading underlying his target man credentials.

He’s good with the ball at his feet, too, with 79 finishing and 76 shot power meaning he’ll be bagging goal after goal for you. Add in his 75 positioning and I’m struggling to work out why his OVR isn’t higher; in any case, it means he’ll end up playing much better than you – or opposition defences – would expect, making him a real bargain.
