In these articles I look at the best cheap, high potential players in FIFA 17, with tonight’s post focusing on goalscorer strikers. By ‘goalscorers’, I mean strikers who use their pace, finishing and dribbling abilities to get their goals. If you want a big, strong striker who is good in the air, you’ll want my guide to the best cheap, high potential target men in FIFA 17. I’ll be publishing that soon, so keep an eye out for it.

In this article I’ll go through a few recommendations, then show you the full list of top quality players afterwards. For a full run down of how I choose the players and what the different columns in the table mean, click on “What are these articles all about?” below.

The articles in this series should give you some ideas if you’re looking for a new signing in a key area. There is one article for each position on the pitch to make it easy for you to quickly find players to bolster your squad.

All of the players given here have a minimum potential of 80, so you know you’re getting quality. The maximum OVR for each player is 75, both to keep transfer prices down and to avoid presenting you with too many options and thus making it too difficult to choose the player you need.

The ‘Avai?’ column is short for ‘available?’ and refers both to whether or not you can buy the specified player at the start of the first season and how long their current contract is. Let’s take Y/2 as an example – Y means that yes, you can buy him at the start of a new career, and the number means he has two years left on his contract. Similarly, N/3 would mean that no, you can’t buy the player straight away, and he has three years left on his contract. These ‘no’ players are often available for transfer if you wait until the January transfer window, however. For some players this column is blank – this means that they are out on loan at the start and are therefore unavailable for purchase until the second season.

The figure in the player cost column refers to the price you are given if you scout the player. There’s also another column – ‘Enquiry’. This refers to the price the other team want for the player if you enquire about him. Often there is a large difference between the player cost obtained through scouting and that obtained through an enquiry. This leaves a lot of room for negotiation, so don’t be put off if a price in the ‘Enquiry’ column is high, as you can usually get the player for much less. Try bidding lower than what you think will be accepted – you may be surprised at their response. If the ‘Enquiry’ column is blank it’s because the team refused to give a price, either because the player has just joined them or because they are loaning him in.

And as a final note, in FIFA 17 EA update player OVRs and potentials every week. Mose of the time these are very minor changes, and most players won’t be affected at all unless they have had a very noteworthy week. Furthermore, some players occasionally disappear if they have been put in the reserve squad that week. So just bear in mind that these figures should be read as a guide only and not a definitive account of player costs, potentials, etc, for the entire season.[/expand]

So without further ado, let’s see the cheap young goalscorer strikers that I recommend.

Lautaro Martínez: potential 86

FIFA 17 best cheap goalscorer strikers

Lautaro Martínez is cheap but has huge potential

It’s rare that the highest potential player in one of my guides is also one of the most affordable, but that’s what you get with Lautaro Martínez. His 86 potential makes him a must buy for any team that can afford him – and there are plenty that can.

He’s got good pace but is also pretty strong, so won’t get easily pushed off the ball. His technical stats are also very nicely balanced, which means that when he gets near that 86 potential, he’s going to be able to do pretty much everything. That kind of striker is highly unusual – and one that you should definitely consider buying.

Racing Club want a mere £2.2m for him, and you can get them down to around £1.7m, which is very, very cheap. His wages are £6,300.

Sebastián Driussi: potential 84

FIFA 17 best cheap goalscorer strikers

Sebastián Driussi is perfect for mid-tier teams looking for a great striker

We’re returning to Argentina with my next choice, Sebastián Driussi of River Plate. If your budget is a bit higher, he’s a great player to buy thanks to his 75 OVR and amazing 84 potential. He’s fast, has great stamina and 77 finishing, making him ideally suited to running in behind defences.

But he can shoot from distance, dribble and score headers too, so is very nicely balanced. He’s even a great passer, so can play as a second striker just behind a target man, if that’s your style of play.

River Plate want £8m for him, but that can be negotiated down to around £6.5m. His wages are £15,500. While he’s not the cheapest player, he is perfect if you’ve got a decent budget and need a high quality, high potential goalscorer.

Jean-Kévin Augustin: potential 81

FIFA 17 best cheap goalscorer strikers

Jean-Kévin Augustin is a deadly striker in the box

If Driussi costs too much for your team but you want someone with a higher starting OVR than Martínez, go for Jean-Kévin Augustin. He’s a goalscorer through and through, with excellent pace 75 dribbling and 78 finishing. That finishing stat in particular is really good for a player with 72 OVR, so he’ll score a hatful of one-on-ones.

He’s also got one of the highest positioning stats of any player in this guide, with 79 positioning. That means he’ll pop up in the right place at the right time to put away his chances. And with 81 potential, he’ll grow into a deadly striker at the highest levels.

Paris want £4.1m for him but you can get him for about £3.5m. His wages are £24,500. That makes him very affordable to mid-tier teams who want a player with a good starting OVR and great potential.
