FIFA 17 good teams for career mode: Coventry City

FIFA 17 | Good teams for career mode – Coventry City

Introduction: How do these articles work?

Each Sunday I examine a different team in detail and look at why they’re a good team for FIFA 17’s career mode. The teams are broken down into the following categories:

  • Tier 1: Teams in tough divisions that can push on to challenge for silverware
  • Tier 2: Teams that will have to fight for survival in a challenging division
  • Tier 3: Teams that start in a lower division but can hope to get promoted and work their way up higher leagues
  • Tier 4: Teams that start right at the bottom of the pile, with few funds or high potential players

Coventry City (Tier 3)

Tier 3 sides start in a low division but have a great chance of working their way up the leagues – perfect for ‘journey’ career modes or returning a team to former glory.

Why choose Coventry City?

If you want to manage a team in FIFA 17 that gives you the time to nurture young talent in the lower leagues before making a push for the higher divisions, Coventry City is an almost perfect choice. They have a great mix of promising young players and spots that need strengthening, and with £2.2m they have one of the best budgets in the division. You’ll be able to grow the players already on the team and complement them with new signings.

And while the ‘Domestic success’ board expectation is crucial, the board usually only wants you to finish mid-table. With your budget and high potential players, that should be fairly straightforward. All that combined means you have enough time and money to build a great squad for the future without the pressure of a required promotion push.

Coventry City’s key player is Stuart Beavon. At 67 OVR he’s the best player on the team, and is an excellent player at League One level. His best stat is undoubtedly his 94 stamina – he can play game after game and keep going, meaning you’ll have a key striker available to bang in the goals on a regular basis. He is 32, though, so you’ll need to think about replacing him soon.

The most promising young player on the team is Ben Stevenson. He’s a central midfielder but really excels as an attacking midfielder. His pace, balance and short passing make him a great playmaker who can get forward and score plenty of goals himself. And his 80 potential makes him one of the most promising young players in the division, so make sure you keep hold of him.

Recommended purchases

Key signings required: GK, CM, ST.

First of all, change Coventry City’s budget ratio to 85:15. This will give you £2,499,726 in transfer funds and £7,825 in wages. Now let’s buy some players.

Mile Svilar can instantly become your first-choice goalkeeper

FIFA 17 good teams for career mode: Coventry City

Mile Svilar
Club: RSC Anderlecht
Position: GK
OVR: 63
Potential: 83
Age: 16
Cost: £700,000
Wages: £1,255

The most obvious problem position at Coventry City is goalkeeper. Reice Charles-Cook is the best option in terms of OVR, but his 61 rating is still the lowest in the starting lineup. Meanwhile the highest potential goalkeeper is Corey Addai, but he’s only got 72 potential – again, the lowest of all the positions. Getting a good goalkeeper should be your first priority.

Mile Svilar of RSC Anderlecht is my recommended player. He’s only 16 but his 63 OVR is already good enough to make him your first-choice goalkeeper. Better yet, he’s got 83 potential, making him exceptionally talented. That high potential means he’ll grow very quickly, so will help make your goal watertight in front of the opposition.

RSC Anderlecht want £925,000 for him, but you can negotiate that down to £700,000. His wages are £1,255, and he wants the ‘important 1st team player’ squad role.

Dante Rigo is an excellent playmaker despite only being 17 years old

Dante Rigo
Club: PSV
Position: CM
OVR: 64
Potential: 82
Age: 17
Cost: £800,000
Wages: £2,600

Coventry’s central midfield will be fine for the first season, but Callum Reilly is only loaned in, so when he leaves you’ll need high potential player to replace him. The players already in the squad aren’t really good enough – Gael Bigirimana has 71 potential, while Vladimir Gadzhev and Andy Rose have already reached their 65 and 63 potentials. That’s not great for the future.

My suggestion is that you buy Dante Rigo from PSV. He’s an excellent creative midfielder, and will develop into a great playmaker in no time. He starts with 72 vision and 73 short passing despite his OVR being 64, so play him as an attacking midfielder and he’ll excel at providing killer through passes to the team’s strikers. His long passing is good too, so he will do well as a deep-lying playmaker if you’d prefer him to play that role.

PSV want £1.1m for him but you can buy him for £800,000. His wages are £2,600, and he wants the ‘important 1st team player’ squad role.

Conor Chaplin has pace that will destroy League One defences

FIFA 17 good teams for career mode: Coventry City

Conor Chaplin
Club: Portsmouth
Position: ST
OVR: 64
Potential: 81
Age: 19
Cost: £950,000
Wages: £3,700

I alluded to Coventry City’s striker problem earlier. Stuart Beavon is great but will retire fairly soon, but in addition to that, Michael Folivi (79 potential) is only loaned in. The team’s other strikers don’t have great potential, with the best one being Kwame Thomas with 73 potential. We need someone better to step in and replace Beavon and Folivi.

My choice is Conor Chaplin of Portsmouth. He’s a bit of a FIFA fan favourite, and it’s easy to see why. With 86 acceleration and 83 sprint speed he will destroy defences in League One. His low centre of gravity and good balance also mean he can dribble around defenders when he can’t outpace them. But that speed, combined with good finishing and 81 potential, making him ideal for counterattacks and finishing any chances he gets in the box.

Portsmouth want £1.4m for him, but you only have to pay £950,000. His wages are £3,700.

Those transfers will leave you with £49,726 in transfer funds and £270 in wages – obviously not enough to buy any decent players or scouts. Let’s see who we can sell to raise some extra money.

Suggested sales

Nathan Clarke can be sold for about £250,000

First to be shipped off should be goalkeeper Lee Burge. He only has 62 potential, and can bring in around £110,000.

Sell defender Nathan Clarke too. He’s got a decent OVR, but is 32 so that’ll quickly decline, and there are other more promising centre backs on the team who can quickly take his place. He’ll sell for about £250,000.

As for midfielders, sell Andy Rose and Kyel Reid for £300,000 and £250,000 respectively. They’ve both reached their potentials, so better to sell now before they start declining.

Finally, sell strikers Marcus Tudgay and Kwame Thomas for £110,000 and £350,000. Tudgay will start declining soon and Thomas has been forced out by Chaplin, so neither are really required.

Those sales should bring in around £1.37m – enough to bring in one or two decent players, or a good scout instead.

Future considerations: get a new central midfielder

Lorenzo Callegari is a fantastic deep-lying playmaker with high potential

The team is still a little short on high potential central midfielders. We’ve brought in Dante Rigo, but we could do with one more to be on the safe side.

My recommendation is Lorenzo Callegari of PSG. Like Dante Rigo, Callegari is a fantastic passer – he’s got 77 short passing and 80 long passing, despite only having 64 OVR. He’s very promising though, thanks to his 82 potential, so will quickly become Pirlo-esque in his passing abilities. Use him as a deep-lying playmaker, allowing Rigo to push forward as an attacking midfielder.

PSG want you to pay £1m, but you can get him for £850,000. His wages are £7,000.

That’s it for this week’s article on good teams for career mode. Coventry City give you enough budget and talented players to get started, but enough room for improvement to give you a real challenge. Invest in good players and develop those you already have and you’ll soon find yourself quickly rising through the divisions.

I’d like to hear if you have any thoughts about the format of the article itself. Did you find it useful? Conversely, do you think it was missing something that you’d have liked me to include?

  1. Just FYI, if you play on PS3, the team starts with only 648K in transfer funds. Makes it a LOT more difficult to get any of these signings.

      1. Yeah, they have. Not sure why there’s such a disparity in funds though. But on the plus side, the squad is still full of talent, and you can get some more cash if you win the preseason tournament, so it still makes them a worthwhile team to consider!
